What's New in AI?

Shop with AI

The AI Shopping Race: A Glimpse into the Future of E-Commerce

Tech companies are working on something new: AI agents that shop for you. From finding products to completing the checkout process, these tools aim to handle the entire experience, so you don’t have to.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Recently, Perplexity launched an AI shopping agent in the U.S. It scours websites, picks out products, and even hits the “Buy Now” button for you.

  • Big names like OpenAI, Google, and potentially Amazon are developing their own AI tools to shop for flights, hotels, and everything in between.

  • Companies like Rabbit and Anthropic are teaching their AI agents to navigate websites like a human. This approach avoids restrictions retailers put in place to block bots.

  • Perplexity partnered with Stripe to issue single-use debit cards, reducing the risk of your AI agent making big (and wrong) purchases. But some companies like Google want direct access to your credit card info, raising eyebrows over privacy.

  • Early attempts show promise but with hiccups. Perplexity's agent, for example, took hours to process purchases or failed due to stock issues. Human oversight remains critical, which adds complexity.

Here’s What I Think:

AI shopping agents are clunky right now but fascinating. They could transform online shopping — saving time, finding better deals, and cutting through the noise. But privacy concerns and retailer resistance could slow progress. For now, it’s a bold experiment with plenty of room to grow.

1 Billion ChatGPT users…

OpenAI Aims for 1 Billion Users by 2025 with Bold New Plans

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has set its sights on a massive milestone: 1 billion users by next year. With 250 million weekly active users already on board, the company is ramping up efforts to scale even further.

Here’s what’s in the works:

  • Building Its Own Data Centers: OpenAI plans to establish data centers across the U.S. Midwest and Southwest to handle the surge in users and power smarter AI models. This move underscores the intense demand for computing infrastructure in the AI space.

  • Scaling Infrastructure: OpenAI executives have highlighted the need to keep investing in cutting-edge models, which require significant resources. The company has been in talks with investors to secure the capital needed for these massive projects.

  • No Ads — Yet: OpenAI is growing fast but isn’t turning to advertising to boost revenue right now. Instead, it’s focused on refining its existing business model, with future revenue streams still on the table.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Earlier this year, OpenAI partnered with Apple to expand ChatGPT's reach. Moves like this are helping OpenAI position itself among tech giants like TikTok and Instagram in user scale.

  • Historic Funding: With $6.6 billion raised at a $157 billion valuation in October, OpenAI is doubling down on AI research and infrastructure to maintain its leadership in the field.

Here’s What I Think:

OpenAI’s ambition is sky-high, and it’s clear they’re betting everything on staying ahead in the AI race. Hitting 1 billion users will take more than just computing power but it’ll require navigating challenges in ethics, privacy, and user trust. If they succeed, it could redefine what’s possible for AI-driven platforms. Let’s see what happens…I think they will reach it.

World Labs’ AI

World Labs’ AI Turns Photos into Interactive 3D Worlds

World Labs, led by AI pioneer Fei-Fei Li, has created a new AI tool that’s making waves. It takes a single photo and turns it into an interactive 3D scene you can explore and modify right in your browser.

Here’s what makes it exciting:

  • Interactive and Dynamic: Unlike most tools that create static 3D models, this system lets you move a camera, adjust lighting, and even change object colors.

  • Realistic Physics: These 3D worlds stick to basic laws of physics, so objects feel solid and scenes stay consistent — no weird glitches like other tools.

  • Still Early: Right now, the scenes are limited. You can only move within small areas, and some rendering mistakes pop up. But World Labs says it’s just getting started and plans to make bigger, more detailed worlds soon.

  • Big Potential: This isn’t just for gamers. Filmmakers, designers, and engineers could use it to create detailed virtual worlds faster and for much less money.

  • Strong Backing: With $230 million in funding from major investors like Andreessen Horowitz and Intel Capital, World Labs is aiming to release its first product in 2025.

Here’s What I Think:

World Labs is taking a big step toward making 3D content creation easier and more accessible. While the tool isn’t perfect yet, it has huge potential to transform industries that rely on virtual worlds. If they keep improving, this could be a game-changer.

Jeff Bezos Joins $693M Investment in AI Startup Tenstorrent

AI hardware company Tenstorrent has raised $693 million in fresh funding, securing a valuation of over $2.6 billion. Investors include Samsung Securities, Hyundai, and Bezos Expeditions, the investment firm of Jeff Bezos.

Here’s the story:

  • Where the Money Goes: Tenstorrent plans to expand its engineering team and develop AI training servers to showcase its capabilities.

  • Future Roadmap: CEO Jim Keller, a veteran in microprocessor development, says the company will release a new AI chip every two years.

  • Contracts in Hand: With nearly $150 million in signed deals, Tenstorrent has started building relationships with customers.

  • Eyeing Nvidia’s Market: As Nvidia dominates the AI chip industry, startups like Tenstorrent, Axelera, and Groq are racing to gain a foothold in this growing market.

Here’s What I Think:

Tenstorrent’s plan to challenge Nvidia is ambitious, but the support from influential investors and a clear strategy gives it a fighting chance. It’s one to keep an eye on as competition in the AI hardware space heats up.
