These ads will be clearly marked and positioned alongside answers, with initial brands including Indeed, Whole Foods, and Universal McCann.

Here’s what to know:

  • Revenue Goals: Perplexity says ads are necessary to fund a sustainable revenue-sharing program for publishers, as subscriptions alone don’t cut it.

  • Ad Transparency: These ads are designed to be non-intrusive. While “sponsored,” answers to these questions are generated by Perplexity’s AI without brand influence, and advertisers won’t have user data access.

  • Staying Balanced: Perplexity insists on maintaining unbiased answers, which I think is key. Ads can provide the cash flow to support their mission, but if it becomes cluttered like Google’s ad-heavy search results, it risks losing trust.

  • Competitive Edge: Perplexity is positioning its ad program as a premium, minimal-interruption experience for educated, high-income users. It’s taking a different route from Google’s AI search ads, aiming for quality over quantity.

  • Legal Hurdles: Perplexity has faced backlash from publishers, including lawsuits from News Corp and a cease-and-desist from The New York Times for alleged content replication. This makes their ad approach even trickier, given the ongoing debate over AI’s use of content.

  • Funding Needs: With just a premium subscription model so far, Perplexity needs new revenue streams to justify its reported $9 billion valuation and ongoing fundraising efforts.

In my view, adding ads is fair as long as Perplexity keeps it high-quality and avoids Google’s “junk ads” model. Monetization is crucial, but they’ll need to keep things classy if they want to scale and maintain user trust.

YouTube is testing a new AI-powered feature that lets select creators remix popular songs by simply describing the style or vibe they want.

Here’s what’s going on:

  • The Remix Experiment: Creators in the test group can choose to “Restyle a track” within YouTube’s Dream Track tool. Just describe the mood or genre they’re aiming for, and AI will create a 30-second remix snippet for use in Shorts.

  • A Lineup of Artists: This feature allows access to vocals from artists like Charlie Puth, Charli XCX, Demi Lovato, and John Legend, giving creators serious musical variety.

  • Keeping Things Legal: To avoid backlash from the music industry, YouTube has partnered with Universal Music Group, pledging to compensate artists and rights holders for the use of their work in these AI remixes.
