Should they regulate AI?

Hell, yeah. But what about the growth?

I have no answer. But what I can say is regulations don’t slow the development. It helps with development because you now would know what to build and what to refrain from building.

Let’s dive in…what’s happening in AI space:

In today’s post:

  • US regulations on AI

  • Uber: Hiring people for AI labeling and more

AI Regulations in the U.S.: What’s Next?

Donald Trump created with Ideogram

As the U.S. government shifts gears under new leadership, the future of artificial intelligence regulation is heading into uncharted territory.

With AI becoming an increasingly influential force, here's a breakdown of what this means and why it matters:

  • Trump’s Approach: The President-elect plans to scrap Biden’s AI executive order, emphasizing “Free Speech and Human Flourishing” over safety rules.

  • Congressional Gridlock: A GOP-led Congress shows little interest in AI-related laws beyond national security and explicit content issues.

  • AI in Elections: AI deepfakes and targeted misinformation shaped the 2024 elections, raising concerns about future misuse.

  • Industry Concerns: While some call for guardrails to prevent harm, others prioritize innovation over strict regulation.

Here’s What I Think:

The debate over AI regulation reflects a broader tension: balancing innovation with accountability. As lawmakers weigh these priorities, the lack of clarity could leave critical decisions to private companies and powerful individuals. The question remains: will this approach support progress or leave gaps that could undermine trust in the technology?

Uber and AI training…

Uber’s New Gig: Training AI Models

Uber is taking its gig model into the world of artificial intelligence. The company’s new “Scaled Solutions” division hires independent contractors to help train AI models, marking its entry into the fast-expanding field of machine learning.

Here’s how it works:

  • AI Labeling for Hire: Uber is connecting businesses like Aurora, Luma AI, and Niantic with gig workers for tasks like data labeling, feature testing, and localization.

  • The Work: Contractors perform tedious jobs, such as identifying objects in self-driving car footage or rating chatbot responses, often for low pay. In India, for example, some workers earn around $2.37 for reviewing AI-generated coding responses.

  • Global Workforce: Uber recruits workers from countries like Canada, India, and Poland, offering pay per task and aiming for diverse cultural inputs to make AI models more adaptable.

  • A Familiar Move: Uber has used AI internally for years, but this expansion offers its AI services to other companies—a shift reminiscent of its past ventures into self-driving cars and AI research.

Here’s What I Think:

Uber’s pivot into AI training shows how labor-intensive machine learning still is. By applying its gig-economy model to AI, Uber might fill a growing need but it also raises familiar concerns about fair compensation and working conditions in this new frontier.
