The Apple’s partnership with OpenAI is getting more serious, as iOS 18.2 will allow users to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus directly through the Settings app.

Starting in December, iOS users can choose to pay $20 a month for premium features right from their iPhone, making this one of the more interesting tie-ups between Big Tech and AI companies.

Here’s what we know so far:

• Direct Integration: Apple is embedding an option for users to upgrade to ChatGPT Plus right within the Settings app, spotted first in the iOS 18.2 beta. This makes signing up for OpenAI’s premium plan seamless for iPhone users.

• What “Plus” Offers: With ChatGPT Plus, users get access to OpenAI’s latest models (like o1-preview), Advanced Voice Mode, and unlimited image generation with DALL-E — all features that free users can’t access. This upgrade could be a big draw for Apple’s ecosystem, which often favors seamless, enhanced experiences.

• Apple’s Unique Approach: Strangely, Apple isn’t paying OpenAI directly for this integration. Instead, OpenAI gets massive exposure through the iOS Settings app, and Apple gains enhanced AI capabilities, boosting appeal for the latest iPhone and iPad updates.

• Revenue Questions: It’s unclear if Apple will take a cut of ChatGPT Plus signups via the Settings app, but it might simply be banking on AI’s draw to boost device upgrades.

• Not Exclusive: Interestingly, Apple isn’t making this an exclusive deal. It plans to integrate other AI models into its products, possibly including Google’s Gemini.

This integration comes as OpenAI navigates major changes, from a $6.6 billion funding round to several high-profile exits, including former CTO Mira Murati.
