• Despite being smaller, it’s designed for both academic and industrial use — and is freely available under an MIT license.

• But the full R1-0528 model is raising red flags for another reason: censorship.

• Independent testing shows it’s significantly more restricted in how it handles politically sensitive topics.

• While it performs impressively across coding and reasoning tasks, it often echoes official Chinese government stances — especially on issues like Xinjiang and leadership critique.

Here’s what I think:

DeepSeek is doing what many open-source model labs can’t high reasoning, low hardware. But it’s also a case study in how political pressure shapes AI. The question now isn’t just “How smart is this model?” it’s “Who decides what it says?”
