PLUS: Meta Movie Gen can now generate videos with sounds

In partnership with

The new tech coming from Meta is just mind blowing.

They are now working on a new AI video generator called “Movie Gen“ which can now generate videos with sounds.

Let’s explore new developments in the AI world together.

In today’s post:

  • Meta Movie Gen AI videos generator

  • Google adding ads in AI search

  • OpenAI launched “Canvas“ for writing and coding

  • The AI “Godmother“ is uncertain about AGI

META AI UPDATE

Meta’s New Movie Gen AI Creates Realistic Video with Sound, But No Public Release Yet

Meta has created a new AI tool called Movie Gen that can turn text prompts into realistic videos with sound effects, but no voice at least not yet.

Even though this technology isn't available to the public, it's clear that Meta is trying to compete with other companies like Runway and OpenAI to advance AI video creation.

THE FEATURES:

  • Text-to-Video: Movie Gen can take written prompts and turn them into videos with matching audio. For example, if the scene has a car, the AI will add engine sounds or background noises like waterfalls or thunderstorms.

  • Audio Integration: The sounds are automatically added based on what's happening in the video—like environmental noises or background music.

  • Editing Capabilities: One cool feature is the ability to make changes by using text commands. You can change a character's outfit or adjust the background without changing the whole scene.

  • Camera Movements: You can also control the camera, using commands like "pan left" or "tracking shot" to make the video look more professional.

Technical Limitations:

  • Resolution and Frame Rate: Movie Gen makes videos at 768p resolution, which is then upscaled to 1080p. It can create 16-second clips at 16 frames per second (which isn't great), but there is a better 24 frames per second option for 10-second clips.

  • No Voice Generation (For Now): The model can make sound effects, but syncing realistic speech to facial movements is still too hard. Voice generation isn't included yet, probably due to both technical and safety concerns.

Why No Public Release?

Meta is not making Movie Gen public yet, probably because they’re worried about people misusing it especially with elections coming up. Tools like this could easily be used to create deepfakes or other harmful content. Meta says safety is a top priority, so they’re being careful about releasing this technology.

GOOGLE AI

Google Introduces Ads to AI-Generated Search Summaries

Google is now incorporating ads into its AI Overviews, the AI-generated summaries that appear for certain search queries, while also adding links to relevant web pages. This move is part of a broader rollout of AI-organized search result pages in the U.S.

Key Changes:

  • Ads in AI Overviews: U.S. mobile users will start seeing ads within AI Overviews for certain queries, such as "how to remove grass stains." These ads will be labeled as “Sponsored” and sourced from Google Shopping and Search campaigns.

  • Highlighted Links: AI Overviews will now include links to web pages that are relevant to the query. For example, a search about air filters might link to a study from the American Lung Association.

  • AI-Organized Search Results: A new feature launching in the U.S. this week, AI-organized search result pages will offer aggregated content from various sources, such as articles, forums, and YouTube videos. These will appear for queries related to topics like recipes or meal ideas.

Google's Push to Keep Users Engaged

These updates are part of Google’s strategy to prevent users from shifting to AI-driven alternatives like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Despite some early issues with AI Overviews, including inaccuracies and unreliable sources, Google is continuing to invest in the feature, which has been particularly popular among users aged 18-24.

Impact on Publishers and Future Expansion

While AI Overviews have raised concerns about decreasing web traffic to publishers, Google claims to be considering these impacts as it fine-tunes its AI search tools. The new ads and AI-driven search pages are part of Google’s larger push to maintain its dominance in the search market, which still commands over 81% of global searches.

OPENAI LAUNCH

OpenAI Unveils ‘Canvas’: A New ChatGPT Interface for Writing and Coding Projects

On Thursday, OpenAI launched "Canvas," a new interface for ChatGPT designed to enhance writing and coding projects. This feature opens a separate workspace alongside the regular chat window, allowing users to generate text or code directly in the canvas. They can then highlight sections for edits. Initially rolling out in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Teams users, Canvas will be available to Enterprise and Edu users next week.

Key Features of Canvas:

  • Editable Workspace: Canvas allows users to edit or tweak AI-generated content without needing to rewrite entire prompts. You can adjust writing or code as needed by highlighting specific parts for ChatGPT to modify.

  • Writing Assistance: Users can generate emails or documents, adjust length, rewrite content in different tones, or even translate entire texts into other languages.

  • Coding Support: Developers can ask ChatGPT to create code, add inline comments, and explain sections of code in plain English. There’s also a "review code" feature, where ChatGPT suggests fixes for code, letting users approve or modify the changes.

This new workspace feature aligns OpenAI with other AI platforms offering similar functionality, like Anthropic's Artifacts and Cursor, as it aims to enhance user experience and attract more paid users.

Once Canvas is fully out of beta, OpenAI plans to extend the feature to free users.

AGI ?

Fei-Fei Li Admits She’s Unsure What It Is

Are you confused about artificial general intelligence (AGI)? You’re not alone. Even OpenAI, which just raised $6.6 billion to pursue AGI, seems unsure about exactly what it is. At Credo AI’s Responsible AI Leadership Summit, Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the “godmother of AI,” admitted that she doesn’t really know what AGI is either.

Speaking to a packed room in San Francisco, Li reflected on her academic background and said, “I come from rigorous, evidence-based AI, so I don’t really know what all these terms mean... I frankly don’t even know what AGI is.” Despite her decades of experience and groundbreaking work, including creating ImageNet in 2006, Li remains unsure about AGI’s true nature.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has described AGI as an AI system equivalent to a “median human coworker.” However, OpenAI's internal roadmap uses five stages to measure progress, from chatbots to advanced AI capable of running entire organizations. Even with these definitions, confusion around AGI persists.

During her talk, Li also discussed her journey into AI, the challenges of building AI models, and her startup, World Labs. While AGI remains elusive, Li is focusing on practical applications of AI, particularly in developing “spatial intelligence,” which aims to give computers a deeper understanding of the physical world.

Li is also advising California on AI regulations and believes the state needs to balance innovation with public safety. Reflecting on the state’s recently vetoed AI bill (SB 1047), she noted, “We need to consider the human impact, not just punish technologists.”

With her startup and advisory role, Li continues to shape AI's future, even as AGI remains a mystery to experts and the public alike.
