Gemini CLI puts an open-source AI agent right where developers work

Google just launched Gemini CLI; a free, open-source AI agent for the terminal. It brings Gemini 2.5 Pro straight into your workflow, no detours needed.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Developers can now run Gemini natively in the terminal with zero friction.

  • It’s built for more than code, think content generation, research, and automation.

  • You get the same tech as Gemini Code Assist, now in CLI form.

  • The free tier offers 1,000 requests per day; the most generous limit out there.

  • You can customize prompts, extend with protocols, or integrate it into scripts. It’s Apache 2.0 open source; inspect, fork, or contribute however you want.

  • IDE users aren’t left out: Gemini Code Assist syncs seamlessly with CLI usage.

Here’s what I think about this:

This is what it looks like when AI stops being a tool and starts becoming infrastructure. The terminal has always been developers’ home base, now it has an AI-native upgrade. If you’re curious where work is going, start with what’s running in your shell.

Research

New research shows A.I. is flattening our originality

The New Yorker just published a sobering deep-dive on how large language models like ChatGPT are shaping and shrinking human creativity.

  • MIT found students using ChatGPT showed less brain activity and creativity. Most couldn’t recall what they wrote because they didn’t really write it.

  • A.I.-generated essays converged on clichés and consensus answers. At Cornell, A.I. flattened cultural expression, favoring Western norms.

  • Writers gradually defer to A.I.’s tone, weakening their own voice.

  • A.I. outputs aren’t neutral; they subtly encode what’s “normal.” As one researcher put it: “You lose your identity. You lose confidence.”

Here are my thoughts:

This isn’t about rejecting A.I.  it’s about resisting the urge to outsource too much. If we let models smooth over all the rough edges of thought, we don’t just lose originality. We lose the tension, conflict, and surprise that make thinking human in the first place.

Analysis

Why most agentic AI projects will fail by 2027

Gartner’s latest analysis reveals a hard truth: while agentic AI holds massive potential, most projects today are headed for failure. Here’s what’s going wrong and what leaders should do instead.

  • Over 40% of agentic AI efforts will be canceled by 2027, says Gartner. The causes? Cost overruns, hype-driven goals, and weak risk controls.

  • Many vendors are “agent-washing” old products without true autonomy.

  • Most current tools can’t achieve complex business tasks over time.

  • Still, Gartner predicts 15% of decisions will be made by agents by 2028. Success depends on workflow redesign not just plugging agents into old systems.

  • Real value comes from scale, speed, and impact across the enterprise.

Here’s what I think:

Agentic AI isn’t failing, it’s being misused. Like cloud computing in its early days, the tech needs clear business alignment, not blind adoption. Organizations that focus on productivity at scale, not novelty, will be the ones who make agentic AI real.
