Launch

Grok 4 is here and so is the $300 price tag.

xAI, Elon Musk’s AI company, has officially released Grok 4, its newest flagship model and introduced a steep $300/month subscription. It's a big swing at OpenAI, but not without controversy.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy aim to compete directly with GPT-5, expected later this summer.

  • Musk claims Grok 4 performs above PhD level on academic tasks, “no exceptions.”

  • Grok scored top marks on tough benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam and ARC-AGI-2.

  • The “Heavy” version uses multiple AI agents to collaborate on answers, like a study group.

  • A new $300/month SuperGrok Heavy plan offers early access to Grok 4 Heavy and upcoming features.

  • xAI plans to release a coding model (August), multi-modal agent (September), and video model (October).

  • Grok’s rollout follows a rocky week including antisemitic outputs and the CEO of X resigning.

Here’s what I think:

Grok 4’s raw horsepower is impressive, but xAI is still in trust-rebuilding mode. Performance might win developers, but public missteps, especially around safety and ethics can’t be papered over with benchmark scores. The next few months will show if Grok can be more than just another powerful but problematic model.

OpenAI’s next move: Taking on Google Chrome

OpenAI is preparing to launch an AI-powered browser a direct shot at Google Chrome. It’s not just about search anymore. It’s about controlling the entire web experience.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Grok’s rollout follows a rocky week including antisemitic outputs and the CEO of X resigning.

  • The browser will integrate ChatGPT-like chat and support AI agent actions like booking or form-filling.

  • It’s built on Chromium (Google’s open-source code), giving OpenAI Chrome like speed and compatibility.

  • The product aims to keep users inside the chat interface, reducing the need to click through to websites.

  • By owning the browser, OpenAI can collect richer user behavior data the same goldmine that powers Google’s ad business.

  • With over 500 million ChatGPT users, adoption could eat into Google’s core advantage: default control of search.

  • The launch follows OpenAI’s $6.5B acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI device startup, signaling a push into personal ecosystems.

  • Competition is heating up: startups like Perplexity, Brave, and The Browser Company are racing to redefine browsing too.

Here’s what I think:

A browser isn’t just another app, it’s where the internet lives. If OpenAI nails this, it shifts the center of gravity from Google’s search box to a smart agent that acts for you. But the challenge isn’t just technical. It’s about trust, default habits, and whether users are ready for an AI that doesn’t just suggest, it decides.

Revolutionary act in AI

Samsung just made its biggest AI decision yet.

At its July 2025 Unpacked event, Samsung confirmed what millions of users were hoping: Galaxy AI features will remain free. In a world of rising AI subscription fees, this is a bold move.

Here’s what’s dropped:

  • Galaxy AI launched with the S24 series in 2024, originally free only through the end of 2025.

  • Samsung now says essential AI tools will remain free beyond that no forced upsell.

  • These features touch nearly every phone function, from texting to video editing to calls.

  • Samsung is still exploring premium AI offerings, but users won’t lose core functionality.

  • Older Galaxy devices can access many AI features thanks to cloud updates, no new phone needed.

  • As rivals race to monetize AI, Samsung’s choice could pressure Apple, Google, and others to follow.

  • With One UI 8 and the new foldables, Samsung is betting on AI as a permanent utility, not a paywall.

Here’s what I think:

Samsung isn’t just avoiding backlash, it’s positioning Galaxy AI as a core part of the smartphone experience. This isn’t just generosity; it’s strategy. In a market flooded with $20/month AI plans, keeping AI free could be what keeps users loyal. The question now is: who follows next?
