Big Tech is pushing AI into places it has never gone before. Google is using millions of news reports to predict flash floods around the world. WordPress is turning the browser into a private AI-powered workspace for writing and building tools. And Microsoft is experimenting with AI assistants that can analyze your personal health records. Together, these moves show the next phase of AI: systems that don’t just answer questions, but learn from massive data and plug directly into everyday life.

In today’s post:

  • AI chatbots want your health data

  • WordPress just turned your browser into a private workspace

  • Google trained AI on news to predict deadly floods

What’s Trending Today

HEALTHCARE AND AI

The next battleground for AI isn’t search or writing

Microsoft just introduced Copilot Health. It lets users upload medical records and wearable data to an AI assistant.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • The tool combines records from multiple doctors with data from devices like Apple Watch and Fitbit.

  • The chatbot then analyzes everything and produces a high-level summary of potential health issues.

  • Companies like Amazon, OpenAI, and Anthropic are testing similar health-focused AI tools.

  • One promise is clarity because medical records often sit across disconnected hospital systems.

  • AI could review years of health data in seconds, something doctors rarely have time to do.

  • But centralizing sensitive medical records creates a high-value target for hackers and surveillance.

  • Experts also worry people will treat AI summaries as diagnoses, despite warnings not to.

Health data is the most valuable dataset tech companies haven’t fully captured yet. Search history tells companies what you’re curious about. Health records reveal what you fear. AI assistants analyzing that data could help people understand their health better. But it also shifts one of the most private parts of life into corporate systems. The real question isn’t whether AI can analyze your health. It’s whether we’re comfortable letting it.

LAUNCH

WordPress quietly launched a personal workspace

WordPress introduced a new service called my.WordPress.net. It lets anyone run WordPress directly inside their browser.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Users can create a WordPress site instantly without hosting, domains, or sign-ups.

  • The entire site runs locally in the browser, with data stored in browser storage.

  • These sites are private by default and cannot be accessed from the public internet.

  • WordPress positions this as a personal environment for writing, research, journaling, and experiments.

  • The platform includes an App Catalog with tools like a personal CRM, RSS reader, bookmarking tool, and AI workspace.

  • It runs on WordPress Playground, which allows WordPress to operate on any device with one click.

  • Users can also use an AI assistant to modify plugins, build tools, and query stored knowledge.

WordPress isn’t just competing with website builders anymore. It’s competing with note apps. By turning WordPress into a private workspace, the company shifts from publishing platform to personal operating system. If this direction continues, WordPress could evolve into something closer to Notion or Obsidian. A place where ideas start long before they become websites.

BREAKTHROUGH

Google just turned millions of news articles into a flood prediction system

Google is tackling one of the hardest weather problems: flash floods. Instead of sensors or satellites, it started with news articles.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Flash floods kill over 5,000 people each year and remain extremely hard to predict because they happen quickly and in small locations.

  • Google researchers used Gemini to analyze 5 million news articles and identify 2.6 million flood events across the world.

  • Those reports were converted into a geo-tagged dataset called Groundsource, giving researchers historical flood signals.

  • A Long Short-Term Memory neural network then used global weather forecasts to estimate flash-flood probabilities.

  • The model now powers Google’s Flood Hub platform, highlighting flood risk across urban areas in 150 countries.

  • The system focuses on places lacking expensive weather infrastructure or detailed meteorological records.

  • Researchers believe the same approach could build datasets for predicting heat waves, mudslides, and other short-lived disasters.

The most interesting idea here isn’t the flood prediction. It’s the data strategy. Google turned messy human stories into structured scientific data. That flips a common assumption in AI: that only clean sensor data matters. If this approach works, newspapers, reports, and written records might become one of the biggest untapped datasets in science. Sometimes the data we need has been sitting in plain sight all along.
