Meta is doing the heavy lifting that Apple should have been doing for years.

With groundbreaking announcements like the Orion AR glasses, Meta is showing it’s serious about the future.

Apple, on the other hand, seems stuck in a loop of small updates and missed opportunities.

In this post, I’ll unpack all the major announcements from Meta Connect 2024 and why it’s time to shift your tech loyalty from Apple to Meta.

In today’s post:

  • Meta connect 2024 event

  • Google’s new AI tool for students

META CONNECT 2024

This is what happened in the event:

1/ Meta AI: A Step Towards Smarter, More Engaging Interactions

Meta AI stole some of the spotlight with exciting new features, including voice updates and expanded multimodal capabilities.

  • Celebrity Voices: Meta AI Voice now features personalities like Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key, bringing a fun twist to interactions on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

  • Visual Understanding: Meta AI will soon be able to “see” and interact with photos shared in chat, providing descriptions and even editing capabilities, which can enhance how we communicate visually.

  • Multimodal Llama 3.2: The latest version of Meta’s AI model, Llama 3.2, expands on its ability to understand and interact with different modes of content, making Meta’s AI suite more powerful and versatile.

2/ Ray-Ban Meta Glasses: New Features and Special Editions

Meta also showcased updates to its Ray-Ban smart glasses, emphasizing new software features that enhance the usability of these stylish wearables.

  • Live Translation: One of the standout updates is real-time translation. Speak in one language and hear a translation in your ear, making communication across languages seamless.

  • Enhanced Voice Control: The glasses now respond more naturally to voice commands without the constant need for wake words like “OK Meta.”

  • Special Edition Design: A new Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Shiny Transparent with Sapphire Lens was announced, showing off the tech behind the glasses with clear frames.

  • Music and Reminders: Control Spotify and Amazon Music, set reminders, and even scan QR codes or phone numbers directly through the glasses.

3/ Orion Holographic AR Glasses: A Glimpse into the Future of Augmented Reality

The standout reveal at Meta Connect 2024 was the Orion Holographic AR glasses an advanced prototype that could redefine the AR landscape.

  • Next-Gen AR: Orion glasses are equipped with cutting-edge holographic lenses made of silicon carbide, enabling users to interact with holographic images as if they were in the real world.

  • Control with Voice, Eye, and Hand Tracking: Orion uses voice commands and tracks eye and hand movements, making interactions intuitive. An EMG wristband allows for additional control with swipes and clicks.

  • No Release Date Yet: Still in the prototype phase, Meta is refining the design with internal development and plans to collaborate with external partners for software and content.

  • Potential Use Cases: From holding virtual meetings with holographic participants to playing interactive games on a virtual surface, Orion aims to bring AR into everyday life in a way never seen before.

4/ Meta Quest 3S: Making VR More Accessible

Meta’s latest addition to its VR lineup, the Meta Quest 3S, aims to bring virtual reality to a broader audience by offering a more affordable option without sacrificing too much on performance.

  • Affordable VR: Priced at $299 for the 128GB version and $399 for the 256GB version, the Quest 3S is Meta’s attempt to democratize VR by making it more accessible.

  • Key Differences: The Quest 3S uses fresnel lenses instead of the pricier pancake lenses found in the Quest 3, resulting in a slightly lower resolution. However, it runs on the same processor as the Quest 3, promising a solid VR experience.

  • Gaming and Beyond: While primarily designed for gaming—launching with titles like Batman: Arkham Shadows—the Quest 3S also supports productivity apps, making it a versatile tool for both entertainment and work.

  • Release Date: Preorders are live, with official sales beginning on October 15.

Meta Connect 2024 highlighted Meta’s continued push into making immersive technologies like VR and AR more accessible and integrated into daily life, alongside a deeper commitment to AI advancements.

Whether it’s through affordable VR headsets, groundbreaking AR glasses, or a smarter AI assistant, Meta is shaping a future where digital and physical worlds blend seamlessly. Stay tuned for more updates as these products move closer to market.
