Microsoft Prepares for a Dark-Cloud Future

Plus: Canva’s Move Into Performance Marketing

Today we are going to see, Microsoft and Canva made very different announcements this week. But both point in the same direction. Microsoft is building cloud infrastructure that works fully offline. Canva is building creative software that owns the entire marketing loop. One is about sovereignty. The other is about workflow control. Both are about reducing dependency. Not more features. More ownership. The quiet shift isn’t AI itself. It’s who controls the system around it.

RESEARCH

Microsoft just made AI work without the internet

Microsoft expanded its Sovereign Cloud this week. The focus is simple: control without compromise. Organizations are under pressure. Regulators are stricter. Risks are higher. Connectivity is no longer guaranteed. And “just use the cloud” is no longer enough. Microsoft’s answer is a fully sovereign stack that runs connected or completely disconnected.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Azure Local now supports fully disconnected operations with local governance and policy control.

  • Microsoft 365 Local keeps Exchange, SharePoint, and Skype running inside sovereign boundaries.

  • Foundry Local enables large multimodal AI models to run on-premises hardware.

  • NVIDIA-powered infrastructure supports serious inferencing workloads offline.

  • Control planes can operate locally through appliance VMs when cloud access is removed.

  • Governance stays consistent across connected, hybrid, and disconnected deployments.

  • Data, identity, and operations never leave the defined sovereign boundary.

This is not about adding features. It’s about removing dependency. For governments and regulated industries, external connectivity can be a liability. Operational continuity becomes non-negotiable. Autonomy becomes strategic. Microsoft is positioning sovereignty as architecture, not policy. The future of cloud is not always connected. When infrastructure works even in isolation, trust changes. And when trust changes, adoption follows. The question is simple: If your cloud went dark tomorrow, would your operations survive?

UPGRADE

Canva just moved from design tool to marketing engine

Canva announced two acquisitions this week. The goal isn’t features. It’s control. Design tools used to stop at creation. You made the asset. Then exported it. Then measured performance elsewhere. Then optimized manually. Canva wants to close that loop.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Canva acquired Cavalry to add professional 2D motion editing.

  • Cavalry strengthens Affinity, Canva’s pro creative suite.

  • Affinity already supports photo, vector, and layout editing.

  • Over 5 million users downloaded Affinity after it went free.

  • Canva also acquired MangoAI, focused on ad performance optimization.

  • MangoAI uses reinforcement learning to improve video ads over time.

  • Canva Grow already connects asset creation to publishing and measurement.

This is vertical integration. Not just create. Create, publish, measure, improve. Inside one system. Canva ended 2025 at $4 billion revenue. It has 265 million users. 31 million pay. But scale isn’t the headline. The headline is ownership of the workflow. If creative, distribution, and optimization live in one place, switching costs rise quietly. And performance becomes the hook. The future creative suite won’t just make content. It will decide what performs.

ROBOTIC CARS

Wayve just turned software into Europe’s autonomous play

Wayve raised $1.2 billion this week in London. It may be Europe’s boldest AI bet yet. Autonomous vehicles have promised a lot. But profits have stayed distant. Regulators move slowly. Consumers stay cautious. And hardware is expensive. Wayve is choosing a different angle.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Wayve builds only AI driving software, not cars or taxi fleets.

  • Automakers license the system and keep manufacturing control.

  • The new round values the company at $8.6 billion.

  • Investors include Microsoft, Nvidia, Uber, and Mercedes-Benz.

  • Driverless taxis will launch in London through Uber trials this year.

  • Consumer cars with supervised autonomy are planned for 2027.

  • The system learns from real-world driving instead of heavy map reliance.

That last point matters. Wayve feeds driving data back into a central model. Every mile improves the system for all vehicles. It’s network effects for mobility. Europe has struggled to produce tech giants. U.S. start-ups raised nearly five times more capital last year. This deal signals ambition, not caution. Still, losses reached $62 million in 2024. Commercialization is harder than research.
