Mistral just raised €3bn to keep Europe in the AI race
Plus: GPT-6 Astra is designed for real-world work
OpenAI is pushing AI toward doing real work. Mistral is raising billions to keep Europe competitive. And Anthropic’s copyright settlement is exposing messy ownership questions. Together, these stories show where AI is heading next: more capable models, more capital, and more complicated consequences.
In today’s post:
Mistral just raised €3bn. The gap is still huge.
GPT-6 Astra changes what AI can actually do
Anthropic’s $1.5B settlement has a new problem

Mistral has raised a record €3bn. Samsung led the round. The deal values Mistral at €21bn. That sounds enormous. Until you compare it with global AI spending.
Mistral says the funding removes a major compute bottleneck, giving it resources closer to leading Chinese AI labs.
Samsung’s involvement goes beyond capital, with plans to use Mistral’s technology in advanced chip manufacturing.
Europe increasingly sees Mistral as strategic infrastructure, not just another software company.
But Mistral still cannot match American rivals dollar for dollar, forcing it to compete more selectively.
That means focusing on narrower frontier capabilities, enterprise cloud services, and industrial applications.
Security is becoming another opening, as companies grow more cautious about deploying autonomous AI agents.
The harder question is sovereignty, especially after Mistral began commercialising a model from China’s Z.ai.
Europe’s AI problem is no longer talent. It is scale. Frontier models require extraordinary amounts of capital and compute. Mistral now has more of both. But €3bn does not erase the global gap. It simply gives Europe a stronger seat at the table. The next question is whether that seat becomes permanent.
LAUNCH
The next AI race is about completing work, not answering questions.

OpenAI just introduced GPT-6 Astra. The benchmark numbers are impressive. But those numbers aren’t the most interesting part. Astra can operate software, browsers, and professional tools. That changes what people can realistically delegate to AI.
Astra scored 59.3% on Agents’ Last Exam, which tests complex professional tasks inside real software.
Its computer-use performance reached 72.6% on OSWorld, while completing simulated tasks far faster than GPT-5.6 Sol.
OpenAI says Astra can handle spreadsheets, presentations, research, forms, software testing, and other multistep workflows.
Coding improved sharply too, with Astra reaching 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0 versus 37.3% for GPT-5.6 Sol.
Science saw another jump, including 97.6% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 96% on GPQA Diamond.
Astra also introduces stronger long-term context handling, helping it preserve useful information across extended coding sessions.
Most importantly, OpenAI focused heavily on boundaries, reporting fewer cases where Astra acted beyond what users authorized.
The benchmark race matters less than the delegation race. People rarely need another chatbot with better trivia scores. They need something trusted with an unfinished task. Astra suggests models are getting much closer to that. The interesting question is no longer, “What can AI answer?” It’s becoming, “What work would you actually hand over?”
STRATEGY
The AI copyright fight is now becoming a rights fight.

Anthropic settled a major copyright case last year. The payout totals $1.5 billion. Nearly 500,000 books are covered. Now authors are discovering something unexpected. Publishers and agents are claiming parts of those payments.
Authors should receive $3,000 for each pirated work covered.
Traditionally published books generally split payments with publishers.
Authors can receive everything when publishing rights had reverted earlier.
Some writers say publishers claimed books they no longer control.
Others report publishers seeking 100% instead of their expected share.
Literary agencies have also made claims, raising further questions.
Industry groups suggest poor records may explain many disputes.
This looks like an AI story. But it is really a metadata story. Copyright only works when ownership records remain accurate. For decades, messy records were mostly an administrative problem. Now billions of dollars can depend on them. AI is exposing something the publishing industry ignored for years. Knowing who owns what has suddenly become extremely valuable.
