Claude Haiku 4.5 brings big performance at small scale

Anthropic just launched Claude Haiku 4.5, a major update to its smallest AI model. Built for speed, cost-efficiency, and parallel deployment, it’s now the default for all free Claude users. And it’s punching well above its weight.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Haiku 4.5 performs close to Sonnet 4 and GPT-5 on key benchmarks at one-third the cost and over twice the speed.

  • It scored 73% on SWE-Bench and 41% on Terminal-Bench, making it a serious option for code and command-line tasks.

  • Anthropic sees Haiku 4.5 as ideal for “agent toolboxes,” where faster sub-agents handle tasks under a smarter planner like Sonnet.

  • Its lightweight architecture enables massively parallel deployment, making it a fit for high-scale production environments.

  • Software dev tools are the first major use case, with Anthropic’s Claude Code expected to benefit from lower latency.

  • CPO Mike Krieger says Haiku “opens entirely new categories” for real-time AI applications.

  • This comes just two weeks after Sonnet 4.5 and two months after Opus 4.1, Anthropic’s launch pace is clearly accelerating.

Haiku 4.5 is a smart strategic move. Not every AI task needs a 200B-parameter behemoth. By focusing on speed, cost, and orchestration, Anthropic is betting that the future of AI isn’t just about smarter models, it’s about how you use them together.

BREAKTHROUGH

Meta’s new Texas data center is massive, green, and all about AI

Meta is going big again. The company just announced a $1.5 billion investment in an El Paso data center designed to power its growing AI infrastructure. It’s Meta’s third in Texas and a clear signal that AI scalability is now a land, power, and infrastructure game.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • The El Paso facility will be Meta’s 29th data center globally, projected to go live in 2028.

  • Once scaled, it can become a 1-gigawatt site enough to power a city the size of San Francisco for a day.

  • It’s part of a broader trend: hyperscalers like Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft are expected to spend over $360 billion on AI infrastructure in 2025.

  • Meta says the site will run on 100% renewable energy and use a closed-loop water system that recycles and restores more water than it consumes.

  • The project will create 1,800 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles, and builds on Meta’s $10B+ investment in Texas to date.

  • The location was picked for its strong grid and skilled workforce but also came with a tax incentive package from the state.

  • This follows Meta’s $29 billion off-balance-sheet funding deal for a Louisiana data center, showing the company is willing to get creative on financing big infrastructure.

The AI boom isn’t just about chips and models, it’s about where those models live, what powers them, and who controls that pipeline. Meta’s bet in El Paso shows that infrastructure is strategy now. And whoever builds first may not just move fast, they may define the rules.

RESEARCH

The U.S. leads the world in AI worry, not just development

A new Pew Research Center report shows that Americans aren’t just pioneering AI tools, they’re also the most worried about them. That contrast could shape how fast (or slow) the tech moves from labs into everyday life.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Half of Americans say they’re more concerned than excited about AI’s rise, the highest among all countries surveyed.

  • Only Italy comes close, while places like South Korea and India show far more enthusiasm than fear.

  • Demographics play a role: men and highly educated people are more excited; women, older adults, and those with less education express more concern.

  • Despite global competition, trust is low, 48% don’t trust the U.S. to regulate AI, and 60% don’t trust China.

  • People trust their own governments and the EU more to regulate AI even if those bodies are slower-moving.

  • In a separate survey, Americans support AI in medicine and weather forecasting, but don’t want it making decisions about relationships, governance, or religion.

  • Gallup polling shows AI weapon development is unpopular, until a foreign rival like China builds one first.

Tech adoption doesn’t just depend on how good the tools are, it hinges on whether people feel okay using them. The U.S. might be pushing AI harder than anyone, but if public anxiety keeps rising, the backlash could slow things down fast. The question isn’t just can we build it, it’s whether people will let us use it.
