X Grok will be free

What if you could automate all your tasks with ChatGPT for just $10? Let's dive in

In partnership with

X is now testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok.

After being exclusive to premium users, this move could bring Musk’s AI tool to a much wider audience.

Here’s what we know so far about the rollout and restrictions:

Here’s everything you need to know:

If you’ve been eyeing X’s AI chatbot, Grok, but weren’t thrilled about paying for it, you might be in luck.

X, Musk’s social network, is experimenting with making Grok available for free users in select regions, which could be a smart move to grab a wider audience and catch up with rivals like ChatGPT and Claude.

Here’s the scoop:

  • Free (for now) but Limited: Over the weekend, several app researchers spotted a free version of Grok popping up in certain areas, confirmed in New Zealand for now. But there are usage caps: free users get 10 queries per two hours on the Grok-2 model, 20 queries with the more streamlined Grok-2 mini, and a max of three image analysis questions a day.

  • A Play for a Bigger Audience: Up until now, only X’s Premium and Premium+ users had access to Grok, but expanding to free users signals Musk’s ambitions to get more people hooked on X’s AI capabilities. Let’s face it — Musk wants Grok to be more than a hidden feature for X’s paying crowd. This is his attempt to go head-to-head with the likes of ChatGPT, Gemini, and other top AI models.

  • Some Fine Print: It’s not a free-for-all yet. New users need a seven-day-old account linked to a phone number to get started with Grok. So, Musk is looking to reel in committed users, not just window-shoppers.

  • The Bigger Picture: Grok launched in August with impressive image-generation abilities using the FLUX.1 model from Black Forest Labs. Recently, it added image analysis — all of which was locked behind a paywall. Now, by loosening the reins, Musk’s team is likely after a faster feedback loop and a bigger user base to gather insights.

Ultimately, it’s classic Musk: roll out a premium feature, build curiosity, and then widen access as the product gains traction. If this test expands, Grok could be positioned as X’s answer to the AI chat market — which might just put it in the ring with the big names in conversational AI.
