AI CHIPS

Nvidia isn't just selling AI chips anymore. It may help finance entire data centers.

Nvidia is considering an unusual move in the AI infrastructure race. The chipmaker could guarantee billions in debt for Nscale. That money would help build Anthropic's massive West Virginia data center. It's a revealing sign of how expensive AI has become. And how far suppliers might go to keep projects moving.

  • Nvidia may guarantee billions in construction financing for Nscale's planned data center. If Nscale defaults, Nvidia could temporarily take control of the facility.

  • Anthropic has committed $44.6 billion to the project's first building alone. A second agreement worth roughly $45 billion is also under discussion.

  • The first building needs 460 megawatts of power. It is expected to run Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips.

  • Nscale faces serious execution challenges. It had roughly 25,000 advanced AI chips operating in August. Its ambitions call for nearly 500,000.

  • Infrastructure delays are already affecting customers. Microsoft withdrew from a planned Nscale project in England. Grid power had been delayed into the 2030s.

  • Nvidia has reportedly extended around $170 billion in investments and credit support. Its financial exposure increasingly stretches beyond selling chips.

  • Investors are becoming more cautious about AI infrastructure. CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN each lost over 30% in October. Meanwhile, Anthropic faces questions about its future credit rating.

The interesting part isn't Nvidia's potential guarantee. It's what that guarantee says about the AI economy. AI infrastructure is becoming too expensive for some customers to finance independently. That creates an unusual relationship. Chipmakers need customers to keep building. Customers increasingly need financial support to buy those chips. Nvidia could benefit from supporting both sides of this equation. But it also creates a new risk. When suppliers start financing demand, growth becomes harder to evaluate. The question isn't whether AI needs more computing power. It's whether that demand can sustain itself without financial support. Is Nvidia strengthening the AI ecosystem, or taking on too much risk?

RESEARCH

AI is changing advertising. Meta and Google are feeling opposite effects.

Meta and Google built their empires on digital advertising. Both are now spending billions to lead the AI race. But their latest earnings reveal an interesting divide. AI is helping Meta make advertising more effective. For Google, it threatens how people discover information. The numbers reveal just how different their challenges have become.

  • Meta's advertising revenue surged 26% to $63.1 billion last quarter. Google's search revenue grew just 12% to $63.4 billion.

  • AI is making Meta's ads more effective. Advertisers following its AI recommendations achieved nearly 5% more conversions.

  • Nearly 10 million advertisers used Meta's AI tools during the quarter. Better targeting gives businesses another reason to spend.

  • Google faces a different challenge. ChatGPT and other AI assistants are changing search behavior. Users can increasingly find answers without visiting websites.

  • Google isn't standing still. It's integrating Gemini across advertising and introducing AI-powered search experiences. But those experiences could also reduce traditional search clicks.

  • Both companies are spending heavily on AI infrastructure. Google's projected capital expenditure reaches $205 billion this year. Meta expects to spend up to $145 billion.

  • Their dependence on advertising creates different risks. Ads generate 98% of Meta's revenue. Google's cloud business gives it another growth engine.

The bigger question isn't which company builds better AI. It's which company can turn changing user behavior into revenue. AI doesn't threaten every established business equally. Sometimes, it makes an existing business dramatically more efficient. Other times, it changes the behavior that made that business profitable. Meta is benefiting from the first effect. Google is confronting the second. But neither outcome is permanent. The winners may be those who adapt their business models fastest. What matters more in the AI era: better technology or owning customer behavior?

INVESTMENT

Wabi wants to turn AI assistants into personal app builders. Investors are betting big.

Wabi has raised $55 million at a $1.25 billion valuation. But the funding isn't the most interesting part. The startup is rethinking how people interact with AI. Instead of simply answering questions, Wabi wants to build useful tools. And you may never need to open an app store.

  • Wabi was founded by Eugenia Kuyda, who previously created Replika. The startup initially helped users build apps through simple prompts.

  • The company recently shifted toward personal AI agents. Its new product, Wabi 2.0, combines AI messaging with custom app creation.

  • Users can create mini apps for everyday tasks. Examples include meal planning, fitness routines, restaurant tracking, and date nights.

  • The idea is to make software adapt to people. Instead of searching for existing apps, users could generate their own interfaces.

  • IVP led Wabi's $55 million funding round. Andreessen Horowitz, Forerunner, and Amazon Alexa Fund also participated.

  • Several prominent tech leaders joined the round. These include Shopify's Tobi Lütke and Salesforce's Marc Benioff.

  • Investors are increasingly backing personal AI agents. Instinct reportedly reached a $10 billion valuation after new funding. Another AI companion startup, Tolan, recently raised $30 million.

The bigger story isn't another billion-dollar AI startup. It's a possible shift in how software gets created. For decades, software companies decided which tools people needed. Users then learned how to operate those tools. AI could reverse that relationship. People might describe their needs and receive software built around them. But creating an app is only the beginning. The real challenge is making it reliable enough for daily use. Wabi's valuation reflects a bet on that future. Would you rather download an app or have AI build one specifically for you?
