Agreement

A chip deal that’s raising constitutional eyebrows

Nvidia and AMD have struck an unusual deal with Washington: pay 15% of revenue from AI chip sales in China to secure export licenses. The move is drawing criticism from legal experts and former officials who say it blurs or outright breaks long-standing rules on export controls.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Under the agreement, both companies will hand over a slice of their China AI chip sales to the U.S. government.

  • This is a departure from typical export controls, which are framed as national security measures, not revenue sources.

  • Critics warn the arrangement could violate the Constitution’s ban on export taxes.

  • Former officials describe the deal as “unprecedented,” “dangerous,” and possibly akin to “bribery or blackmail.”

  • Nvidia has not shipped its H20 AI chips to China for months but hopes new rules will open that market again.

  • The deal follows President Trump’s reversal on earlier restrictions, a decision already controversial in policy circles.

  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been lobbying the White House throughout the year, meeting with the president days before the deal was finalized.

Here’s what I think:

This deal isn’t just about chips, it’s about precedent. If revenue-sharing becomes a condition for exports, the line between national security and economic leverage gets blurry fast. Whether courts strike it down or not, it’s a sign of how fluid the rules can become when tech dominance is at stake.

Update

Anthropic adds memory feature to its Claude chatbot

Anthropic has given its Claude AI chatbot a new skill, memory. Now, it can recall past conversations and bring them back when you need them, making long-running discussions much easier to continue.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Claude can now reference and summarise earlier chats when asked.

  • The feature aims to help users pick up conversations without re-explaining details.

  • Memory is available from today for Max, Team, and Enterprise users, with other plans to follow.

  • Users can enable or disable the feature anytime in settings.

  • OpenAI added a similar memory function to ChatGPT in May, allowing it to remember preferences and personal details.

  • Such features have sparked debate over emotional intimacy between AI and users.

Memory in chatbots feels like a natural next step for usability but it also raises fresh questions about privacy, consent, and how attached we might become to our AI. The tech is powerful; the challenge will be ensuring it’s handled with transparency and control.

Thought

Why AI could elevate but not replace the jobs we value most

Moshe Zilberstein, General Partner at Next47, sees AI’s impact splitting along a sharp line: white-collar roles will be boosted, blue-collar roles could be erased. But in both cases, he believes human-to-human interaction will become more valuable than ever.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Zilberstein says AI will transform both front- and back-office work, with white-collar jobs seeing major productivity gains.

  • In blue-collar industries like logistics, agriculture, and manufacturing, AI-powered robotics may replace human labor outright.

  • Human-centered sectors like hospitality, education, healthcare could see people elevated, not replaced, by AI.

  • Next47 now evaluates every investment through an AI-first lens, embedding it into diligence, research, and market analysis.

  • He warns that AI moats aren’t about having “the best model” but about defensible data, integration, and workflows.

  • Israeli startups excel in AI optimization and infrastructure, especially in storage, inference acceleration, and orchestration.

  • Zilberstein calls for a national shared-compute strategy to keep Israel competitive in AI development.

Here’s what I think:

This framing that AI as a tool that could make human touch a premium flips the usual automation panic. The risk is real, but so is the opportunity to design systems where tech takes the busywork and people handle what truly matters.

Strategy

Google’s AI war chest makes a bold cybersecurity move

Alphabet’s investment arm, CapitalG, has sold its entire stake in CrowdStrike, a holding it first backed in 2015 and is putting a massive $32 billion into Wiz, a fast-rising cloud security startup. The shift underscores Google’s push to own more of the infrastructure powering its fastest-growing AI segment.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Alphabet plans $85 billion in capital expenditures this year, two-thirds going to AI servers.

  • CapitalG manages $7 billion in assets and has been an early backer of 16 IPOs.

  • CrowdStrike once made up 15% of CapitalG’s equity portfolio, with 1.3M shares at the end of 2023.

  • CapitalG trimmed its stake during 2024’s rally, then sold completely after shares rebounded from a major outage.

  • The July 2024 outage caused a 40% share price drop and hit CrowdStrike’s operating margins.

  • Wiz, founded just five years ago, has become a major competitor in cloud security.

  • Alphabet’s acquisition aligns with its strategy to strengthen AI-related infrastructure and services.

Here’s what I think:

Alphabet’s pivot from a public market leader to a private market upstart is a clear sign it wants tighter control over the tech stack. In AI’s high-stakes arms race, owning the infrastructure might matter more than holding stock in those who just run on it.
