Opus 5 Beats Fable 5 Where It Matters

Plus: Cursor Launches a Cheaper Plan for Indian Developers

In partnership with

AI competition is accelerating on every front. This week, Cursor doubled down on India with its first local pricing strategy, Anthropic launched Opus 5 with fewer restrictions and stronger performance, and the U.S. moved to block new Chinese humanoid robots in a bid to secure its AI supply chain. Together, these stories show that the next phase of AI won't be defined by better models alone, it will be shaped by pricing, product design, and geopolitical strategy.

In today’s post:

  • Anthropic Just Fixed What Users Hated Most

  • Cursor Just Made Its Smartest Move Yet

  • The US Just Drew a New Line in the AI Race

UPGRADE

Sometimes the biggest AI upgrade isn't a smarter model. It's fewer restrictions.

Anthropic's latest release isn't chasing the biggest benchmark headline. Instead, it's addressing one of the most common frustrations developers had with its previous flagship model.

  • Anthropic introduced Opus 5, the newest version of its heavyweight AI model, just two months after releasing Opus 4.8.

  • Despite being positioned below Fable 5, Opus 5 outperforms it on several internal benchmarks while costing less to use.

  • The model places a stronger emphasis on verifying its own work, refining outputs, and solving complex problems through careful iteration.

  • One of the biggest changes is a lighter safety approach, with Anthropic expecting safety classifiers to intervene 85% less often than they do with Fable 5.

  • Unlike Fable and Mythos, Opus 5 is not subject to Anthropic's 30-day data retention policy, making it more attractive for privacy-conscious users.

  • Security safeguards remain in place for high-risk tasks, allowing defensive code reviews while restricting requests that could enable offensive cybersecurity activities.

  • Anthropic also introduced Automatic Fallbacks, a beta feature that redirects blocked prompts to a less powerful model instead of returning an error, helping developers maintain workflow without unnecessary interruptions.

The AI industry is moving beyond the race for bigger models. Developers increasingly value reliability, privacy, and fewer unnecessary barriers over marginal benchmark gains. Opus 5 reflects that shift. The companies that remove friction without compromising safety may end up creating the tools people choose to use every day.

LAUNCH

Winning AI isn't just about better models. It's about better pricing.

Cursor is betting that the next wave of AI adoption will come from affordability, not just capability. Its latest India-first strategy shows how AI companies are beginning to compete for developers long before they compete for enterprises.

  • Cursor launched Cursor Start in India for ₹649 per month, making it its first country-specific subscription and significantly cheaper than its global Pro plan.

  • India is already Cursor's third-largest market and its fastest-growing community of power users, with the user base more than tripling over the past year.

  • The new plan gives developers higher AI coding limits, cloud agents, plug-ins, UPI payments, and Cursor's own AI models while excluding premium frontier models and advanced enterprise features.

  • Instead of treating India as a discounted market, Cursor designed the pricing to remain commercially sustainable by relying more on its in-house AI models with lower operating costs.

  • The company is also investing on the ground, expanding hiring across sales, customer support, government affairs, and leadership roles in major Indian technology hubs.

  • Cursor believes individual developers, startups, and universities are driving today's adoption, while banking and large enterprises represent the next phase of growth.

  • The launch comes just weeks before Cursor is expected to join SpaceX in a $60 billion all-stock acquisition, positioning India as a key market in its long-term global expansion strategy.

The AI race is entering a new phase. The winners won't simply build the smartest products. They'll build pricing models that match local markets without sacrificing sustainability. India has become too large and too influential for AI companies to treat as just another international market. Cursor's move suggests that localisation is no longer a marketing strategy—it's becoming a competitive advantage.

POLICY

The next AI battle won't be about chatbots. It'll be about machines.

The Trump administration has taken a major step in the US-China technology rivalry. This time, the focus isn't AI models or chips. It's the physical machines expected to power the next generation of industry.

  • The US Federal Communications Commission announced a ban on imports of new Chinese humanoid robots, quadruped robots, and connected power inverters, citing national security and cybersecurity risks.

  • Officials argue these devices could expose critical infrastructure to supply-chain disruption, remote compromise, or data collection that threatens America's AI ecosystem.

  • The restrictions apply only to new product models entering the market, although regulators retain authority to revisit previously approved products.

  • One company likely to feel the impact is Unitree, one of China's largest humanoid robot manufacturers and a significant player in the emerging robotics market.

  • The policy also targets Chinese-made power inverters, essential equipment connecting renewable energy systems, batteries, and data centres to electrical grids.

  • The administration says the broader objective is to strengthen domestic manufacturing while reducing dependence on Chinese technology in industries expected to become central to AI-driven economic growth.

  • Beijing rejected the move, accusing Washington of unfairly targeting Chinese companies and warning it would respond if its national interests were materially harmed.

The AI race is expanding beyond software. Governments increasingly see robots, industrial equipment, and energy infrastructure as strategic assets rather than ordinary products. Whether these restrictions improve security or reshape global supply chains remains uncertain. What is clear is that future competition in AI will depend as much on who builds the hardware as on who builds the models.
