Jobs

Alphabet’s AI plan? Hire more, not less

In a candid interview with Bloomberg, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the elephant in the room: Will AI cost people their jobs? His answer: Not at Alphabet.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Pichai dismissed fears that AI will replace half the company’s workforce, saying it's more likely to drive hiring.

  • He called AI an "accelerator," not a threat, enabling engineers to skip tedious tasks and focus on high-impact work.

  • Alphabet plans to keep growing through 2026, even as it becomes more AI-driven.

  • Layoffs in 2025 have been more targeted compared to the sweeping cuts of 2023 and 2024. Innovation remains the priority, with Pichai highlighting Waymo, quantum computing, and explosive YouTube growth.

  • YouTube in India alone hosts 100 million channels; 15,000 of which have over a million subscribers.

  • While optimistic, Pichai acknowledged real concerns about AI's broader impact, calling for debate and caution.

Here’s what I think:

Pichai is threading a needle. He wants to ease public anxiety while steering Alphabet deeper into an AI future. The tension between efficiency and employment isn't going away. But his message is clear: the goal is to expand, not replace. Whether that promise holds beyond engineering teams is the real question.

Updates

ChatGPT just leveled up for business users

OpenAI just dropped a major update for business users of ChatGPT. The new features make it more competitive with Zoom, Notion, and enterprise AI tools.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • ChatGPT can now connect to Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, and SharePoint.

  • It can search your cloud documents to answer questions and build outputs.

  • Meeting recording and transcription are built in with time-stamped notes and action items.

  • Users can turn meeting tasks into Canvas projects directly inside ChatGPT.

  • Deep research now works across HubSpot, Linear, and beta integrations with Google and Microsoft tools.

  • With MCP support, Pro and Enterprise users can plug in even more tools for custom workflows.

  • Over 3 million teams are already paying for enterprise features and this makes it an even stronger sell.

Here’s what I think of this:

The more OpenAI turns ChatGPT into an operating system for work, the harder it gets for startups like Notion or ClickUp to compete. OpenAI isn’t chasing features, it’s building a platform where work happens by default. The question is no longer whether ChatGPT is useful at work. It’s whether you’re ready to trust it with all of it.

Personalization

WhatsApp is quietly becoming an AI playground

WhatsApp is testing a feature that lets you build your own AI chatbot. It’s part of a new beta rollout for iOS and it’s surprisingly powerful.

Here's everything you need to know:

  • Beta users can now create personalized AI assistants directly inside WhatsApp.

  • This skips the need for Meta AI Studio, Messenger, or Instagram.

  • You can customize everything: name, tone, purpose, personality, and avatar.

  • WhatsApp walks you through setup with smart suggestions and templates.

  • The assistant can be private or shared via a link to groups or friends.

  • Roles like study coach, travel planner, or journaling buddy are suggested.

  • It’s a direct challenge to OpenAI's Custom GPTs, but inside an app 2B+ people use.

Here’s what I think:

This feels less like a novelty and more like a foundational shift. If even a fraction of WhatsApp’s users start building AI tools for personal use, we’re looking at a new layer of digital interaction one that doesn’t require coding, hype, or even leaving your chat app.

Lawsuit

AI training just sparked another major legal fight

Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing the AI startup of scraping its content without permission to train its chatbot, Claude.

Here’s the situation:

  • Reddit claims Anthropic accessed Reddit content over 100,000 times without a license.

  • The company says Claude admits to being trained on Reddit data, including possibly deleted posts.

  • Unlike OpenAI and Google, Anthropic refused to sign a licensing deal.

  • Reddit is demanding damages and a court order to stop further use.

  • The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco, just miles from both companies' HQs.

  • Anthropic denies wrongdoing and says it will fight the claims.

  • This comes weeks after it launched Claude 3.5 models and reported $3B in annualized revenue.

Here’s what I think:

This case could shape how AI companies approach data sourcing and whether scraping public forums remains a gray area or becomes a legal liability. If Reddit wins, expect more platforms to lock up their content behind paywalls or licenses.
