The AI Gap Between Companies Is Widening

Plus: NYC Draws a Line on AI in Schools

AI is moving deeper into work, shopping, and education. OpenAI says leading companies are turning agents into repeatable workflows. Fashion brands are learning that logistics data now shapes AI visibility. Meanwhile, New York City is limiting AI use for younger students. Together, these stories show one thing clearly: AI adoption is accelerating, but the rules around where it belongs are still being written.

In today’s post:

  • The companies getting 8.3× more from AI

  • AI may soon choose which brands consumers see

  • AI is leaving the classroom. For now.

How AI-Era Pricing Is Reshaping Finance Operations

Usage-based and hybrid pricing models are changing how B2B companies generate revenue — and creating new headaches for the finance teams behind them.

Tabs co-founder Rebecca Schwartz and PwC Partner Amit Dhir sat down to unpack exactly what that means in practice: how pricing model decisions ripple into revenue recognition, forecasting, and financial ops — and what it takes to scale without piling on manual work.

Watch the on-demand recording to get practical frameworks, real-world examples, and a clear path to operationalizing usage-based revenue — including a forward-looking take on how AI will reshape financial workflows. If your team is navigating pricing complexity heading into the back half of the year, this is worth an hour.

AI advantage is becoming an operating advantage

OpenAI says the AI usage gap is widening fast. The leading companies are not simply prompting more. They are giving AI real jobs to complete. Those jobs include context, tools, permissions, and review. That changes AI from software into operating capability.

  • Frontier firms generate 8.3× more AI output per user. That gap was only 2.6× in January.

  • Basis turned employee onboarding into a repeatable agent workflow. First-day setup dropped from two hours to 30 minutes.

  • Clay gives every customer account its own persistent agent. Those agents continuously organize scattered sales information and surface priorities.

  • Clay says this saves roughly one hour nightly. More importantly, sellers start each morning knowing what matters.

  • Exa lets Codex find potential developer integrations automatically. It can research opportunities, create pull requests, and run tests.

  • Humans still control consequential decisions across these workflows. Agents execute defined work while people manage judgment and commitments.

  • The pattern is remarkably consistent. Start narrow, add context, connect tools, then expand responsibility carefully.

The interesting AI divide is not model access. Almost everyone can access capable models now. The advantage comes from redesigning work around them. Companies learning this early build institutional knowledge faster. Their workflows improve each time employees use them. That compounding effect may matter more than model upgrades.

Your logistics data is becoming a marketing channel

AI is changing how shoppers discover products. But visibility now depends on more than keywords. Agents also examine price, stock, delivery, and returns. That makes operations part of brand discovery. Reliable data may determine who gets recommended.

  • Sixty-one percent of consumers have used AI while shopping.

  • AI agents increasingly compare delivery, pricing, inventory, and returns.

  • Poor logistics data can quietly remove brands from consideration.

  • Structured, real-time data gives agents more confidence recommending products.

  • Shopping searches on generative AI platforms grew 4,700 percent recently.

  • Zara and H&M already receive meaningful traffic from AI platforms.

  • Loyalty still matters after discovery, especially through experience and community.

SEO used to reward whoever explained products best. AI commerce changes that equation. Now brands must prove they can deliver reliably. Marketing, logistics, and data infrastructure are becoming intertwined. The next visibility advantage may come from operational excellence.

STUDENTS AND AI

New York just drew a line around AI

New York City is putting AI on pause. At least for younger students. The ban lasts one school year. It covers elementary and middle school classrooms. And it affects roughly 600,000 students.

  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani says students still need human connection. Teachers, classmates, and difficult problems remain central to learning.

  • Schools will stop using around 40 educational AI tools. That makes this more than a ChatGPT restriction.

  • High school students will still access AI sometimes. The city clearly sees age as an important boundary.

  • Teachers can continue using AI behind the scenes. Lesson planning and scheduling remain permitted under the policy.

  • New York has tried AI restrictions before. It temporarily banned ChatGPT shortly after its 2022 release.

  • That earlier ban was eventually replaced by experimentation. Schools later adopted an AI-powered teaching assistant.

  • The bigger question extends beyond New York. Schools must decide which thinking students should never outsource.

Banning AI may create useful breathing room. But the harder problem comes afterward. Students will eventually work alongside these tools. Schools must teach them when AI helps. More importantly, when thinking alone matters more. That distinction may become a core educational skill.
